SNP/Plaid Euro-MPs to question EU Commission President Nominee

Euro-MPs from the Scottish National Party and Plaid Cymru will today (Tuesday) question Josť Durrao Barroso, until recently Portuguese Prime Minister and now nominee to take over the Presidency of the European Commission.

Sr. Barroso will attend a meeting of the parliamentary group to which the Scottish and Welsh nationalists belong in the European Parliament to put his case to MEPs and answer their questions. The full Parliament meeting in Strasbourg next week will then get the chance to accept or reject Sr Barroso's nomination.

Speaking ahead of the hearing, SNP European Leader Ian Hudghton MEP indicated that he would seek to question Sr. Barroso on the Common Fisheries Policy.

Ian Hudghton MEP (SNP) said:

"The CFP has been a complete disaster for Scotland and I'll be seeking assurances from Sr. Barroso that he understands the scale of the problems caused by this dreadful policy. The SNP will continue to make the argument for the CFP to be scrapped - we'll await Sr Barroso's approach to the issue with interest."

Jill Evans MEP (Plaid Cymru) said that she hoped to test Sr. Barroso's commitment to the role of smaller nations in Europe:

"I'm keen to hear Sr Barroso's views on the role he believes smaller nations such as Wales have to play in the European Union, particularly in the newly expanded EU where six member states are actually smaller than Wales."

SNP Euro-MP Alyn Smith added:

"A report out today shows that two thirds of Scots want to see stronger powers for the Scottish Parliament. As pressure for further constitutional change grows, Barroso needs to spell out what the European Commission will do to respond to the aspirations of the people of Scotland, and of other parts of Europe, that demand greater control over their own affairs."

Josť Manuel Durrao Barroso, President designate of the European Commission will meet members of the Green / EFA Group in the European Parliament this afternoon (Tuesday) at the Parliament Building in Brussels from 3pm. The meeting is open to members of the press and media.
